Lesson Plan 2 10/16/2020 Teachers: Brady(Main Teacher) and Jessica
Project: This lesson is a continuation of the last focus, building on what students have planned from their emotion ideation sheets. It is important to understand that students' emotions and ideation plans will all be different. Students will use their ideation sheets from the first class to create a background for a their silhouette. Students will have the majority of class to paint and work
Essential Understandings
Students can express my emotion through art
Students can express my emotion in art with many different materials
Students can express my emotion through art when they can't express it other ways
Essential Question:
How can you express your emotion or multiple emotions on your page?
Students will to use their emotion to create forms with color
Students will use different colors and forms to signify their emotion
Students will be able to connect their color and forms with their map of their emotion
Students will be able to create art based on their emotions or emotion of their choice
Motivation:
To hook the students we will show them several examples of the variations students can make. We can also relate it to the movie Inside out like before, talk about the various ways emotion is shown. A theme park for happiness, hugs for family etc.
Ideation:
Students will have completed an ideation sheet where they mapped out emotion. Now students will explore how they express these emotions in color, shape or form.
Procedures:
This lesson will be organized so students have the most time to explore their emotions and create their art. First we will engage students in a review discussion to get them thinking about their emotions and ideation worksheets from the week before. With both teachers we will be able to help and answer any questions students have. We can hover around students to push their ideas further and help them make decisions.
Color (associative color)
Students will access their previous knowledge on how different colors demonstrate different emotions.
Students will be invited to discuss this openly with their teachers and peers.
Students will be asked to explain their color choices in their final ideations and relate this to their own experiences.
Line /Form
Students will be asked to draw lines and forms that represent different emotions.
Materials:
Tempera paint (various colors)
Ideation worksheet
Paintbrushes
Paper (black and white)
Water cups
chalk or pastel
Documentation:
The lesson for the day began with instructions on how to use their ideation sheets and express emotion onto the final background page. Then students would cut out their silhouettes to be place on top.

In this image, the teacher is demonstrating pastel techniques with paint with students.
For this lesson only two students showed up for the class. We also had their younger siblings join us for the day. All the students were excited to use the materials and effectively express their emotions. I asked one student why they were including so many colors, it was because they wanted to show all their emotions not just one single emotion. Although only two students showed up we had a fun and effective day of class work.
The images above show the beginning of class where the teacher explains the lesson for the day, the images also show the process and students working through their emotions with explorations of the materials.
During the artmaking process, I was very impressed by the students reasoning being colors being used or techniques being used for their project. Even the two younger students that joined us amazed me with their experimentation and what they created. The students used their ideation sheets well, planning out the colors and techniques they wanted to use.
Student work
Both students that attended the class created similar final pieces but still used variations of color and technique. Both students also used several emotions and ideation sheet mixed together to create their final piece
These paintings are from the younger siblings of the students who joined the class. They were extremely excited to use the materials. It was interesting to talk to these students and listen to their reasoning behind color and other design elements in their art.
At the end of class students were asked to write down and explain their choices behind the colors and emotions they were trying to represent. The images show their exploration of colors and techniques, while this gives us some insight into their thinking.
To end it
Overall, I felt that students were excited to use and explore with the materials they had use before. The two students didn't need much motivation for them to get right to work. Next time, I would give students more time to explore techniques and have them use a minimum of 2-3 different techniques in their final piece. I designed the lesson to have a "brain break" half way through to play Simon Says and give students a break from their project, although we didn't have time for it because students needed to finish their projects. I also wanted to have a longer and deeper discussion at the end showcasing their final pieces but we didn't have much time or many students to participate in the discussion.
